Is your child a Scout and looking for their Bird Merit Badge?
That Quirky Bird Girl’s Bird Badge Program is an interactive, beginner-friendly bird experience designed to help children connect with nature, curiosity, and community through birds. The program combines outdoor exploration, bird identification, journaling, and guided learning in a way that is accessible, engaging, and especially welcoming to neurodivergent youth and families.
Through guided walks in Central Park, participants learn foundational bird skills including how to use binoculars, observe bird behavior, identify common species, and document their findings in field notebooks. The experience emphasizes curiosity, confidence-building, and learning through direct interaction with the natural world.
In addition to public bird walks and private educational experiences, That Quirky Bird Girl is also partnering with scout groups throughout New Jersey to help children work toward earning their bird-focused badges. These experiences are designed to align with scouting values centered around outdoor education, observation, environmental stewardship, and community engagement.
The program includes:
• Guided bird walks and outdoor learning experiences
• Beginner-friendly bird identification education
• Bird journaling and observation activities
• Printable worksheets and educational materials
• Neurodivergent-friendly engagement and learning approaches
• Opportunities for scouts to complete badge-related educational components
The overall goal of the program is to make birds approachable, joyful, and community-centered while helping young people build confidence, curiosity, and a stronger connection to the outdoors.

Does your child have ADHD, autism, sensory sensitivities, or difficulty staying engaged in traditional learning environments?
That Quirky Bird Girl’s outdoor bird experiences are intentionally designed to help neurodivergent children feel energized, curious, and connected through movement, exploration, and hands-on interaction with the world around them. Rather than requiring children to sit still for long periods of time, these experiences encourage active participation, observation, conversation, and discovery throughout Central Park.
Birds naturally supports:
• Curiosity-driven learning
• Movement and sensory engagement
• Confidence-building through observation
• Emotional regulation through nature exposure
• Social connection in a low-pressure environment
• Independent thinking and creative exploration
Children are encouraged to ask questions, move at their own pace, and interact with the environment in a way that feels comfortable and exciting to them. Whether we’re spotting a hawk overhead, listening for bird calls, or documenting discoveries in a field notebook, the goal is to create an experience where children feel engaged, supported, and genuinely excited about learning outdoors.
That Quirky Bird Girl’s experiences are especially welcoming to neurodivergent youth and families looking for educational opportunities that feel joyful, accessible, and community-centered.
Make learning feel safe, joyful, and made for every kind of mind.
